Two brief notes on Egypt
February 2, 2011
First: I found on Facebook a link to a blog post called “A Guide: How Not To Say Stupid Stuff About Egypt,” and couldn’t resist checking immediately to see if anything I wrote came under that category. I was relieved to find that I seem to have not only avoided most or all of the faux pas listed, but more or less directly opposed one or two of them. Whew.
Second: the “spontaneous patriotic” pro-Mubarak demonstrators remind me of nothing so much as the murderers of Lambrakis as depicted in the movie Z, the thugs whom the fascist general in charge calls “the healthy elements of society, the antibodies.” Which, come to think of it, shouldn’t surprise me as Z was filmed in Algeria and most of the extras were locals…
The camels are an original touch though.
