Another take on Obama

December 12, 2010

There’s this interesting piece by Ishmael Reed in today’s NY Times, arguing that the President, as a black man, simply can’t afford to show the kind of passion the left expects of him.

One progressive commentator played an excerpt from a Harry Truman speech during which Truman screamed about the Republican Party to great applause. He recommended this style to Mr. Obama. If President Obama behaved that way, he’d be dismissed as an angry black militant with a deep hatred of white people. His grade would go from a B- to a D.

I think this makes good sense. I do basically like the guy and believe that he means to get the best deal he can for America and the people. This doesn’t however justify his turning around and showing passion against the left.  I think he should learn to work with it, use its passion to his advantage even without showing it himself.

Maybe the best thing the left can do is ignore the President personally, continue making the case against the plutocracy and the Republican party as cogently as they can (Go Bernie!!!!) as if Obama weren’t part of the picture, blame the other side exclusively for the compromises he seems to find necessary, talk about primary challenges for the remaining Blue Dogs in ’12 but not for Obama himself; let him play the “good cop” if he feels he has to, and let us be the “bad cop.” This could work!
